Beaconsfield - Results of Public Inquiry expected soon.

Beaconsfield is to the south of Cullercoats and provides the only green space close to the village. It is on the boundry with Tynemouth, and is used extensively by locals and visitors for recreation. It provides a breathtaking view of the sea from the Metro train, the only place on the entire line where the sea becomes visable to passengers.
The local Council has put forward plans to 'develop' the land, which would mean that they would allow the building of a planned Metro station on what is now a playground and Scout hut. An access road would be placed on the field, and commercial buildings would be built on the green space. A strong local protest at the proposed development has led to a hearing before a Government Inspector, held earlier in the year. The Inspector also heard other proposed changes to the UDP by the Council.
It is hoped that when the Government Inspector publishes his findings, that Beaconsfield will be spared and remain as it is for the locals and visitors to enjoy. Local opinon is strongly in favour of this happening. These photos taken 18/6/00.
