Cullercoats RNLI Harbour Day 21st July 2001

Harbour Day 2001, the weather held and it was very warm....the crowds came down.....and it was the fun event of the calender. Well stocked stalls sold out, the bands played the day away, gallons of tea drunk and the beach packed out. Not a drop of rain .
This is an important fund raising event for the RNLI, as this organisation is voluntary and has to raise it's own funds. It may be your life thats saved one day, and events like these serve to remind us all of the selfless dedication of all those who serve and risk their own lives to save those in distress at sea.
Shown here is a traditional Cullercoats Fishwife's costume. The RNLI collecting box is modern.
The stalls remained busy all day, Canoe races, breaches bouy demonstrations, the local pub staff dressed up.... The Steel band played...someone lucky won the cruise to Norway.....The RNLI crew launched their craft for a mock rescue. It was difficult to find a moment when something was not going on.
