Townsfolk win key battle for seafront space

Keep this rare delight, says inquiry report.
Newcastle Journal Feb 7th, 2001.

A battle by more than 2,500 townsfolk to save open space on the seafront was boosted yesterday with the unveiling of the findings of a public inquiry......One of the most highly charged issues was the council's allocation of Beaconsfield, a green lung between Tynemouth and Cullercoats, for leisure-based development and a Metro station.
......Inquiry Inspector John Shepard's 439-page report backs protesters and comes down in favour of keeping Beaconsfield an open space........On Beaconsfield, Mr Shepard said: "I am in no doubt that there would be little potential benefit in allocating any part of the site for development compared with the very great potential harm likely to be caused by development ".
But he said that there was scope for a Metro station with most of the land needed lying within the boundries of the exisisting lines.....
