Dove Marine Laboratory at Cullercoats
Department of Marine Sciences and Coastal Management - Newcastle University
The Dove Marine Laboratory at Cullercoats Bay is a focus for research into the temperate marine environment. The Laboratory possesses a research vessel, Bernicia, which is well equipped for marine sampling over extended periods. She works regularly in the North Sea and in local estuaries, being involved in the research programmes of a number of University departments. Laboratory staff have compiled long time-series of data concerning zooplankton and benthic communities. In addition, current temperate research programmes include aquaculture, kelp forest dynamics, control of invertebrate reproduction, feeding in marine birds, rocky shore ecology, the dynamics of marine communities and parasitology of estuarine fish.
Departmental research groups also actively participate in large, multidisciplinary institute programmes on board ocean-going research vessels, typically spending up to several weeks at sea in sometimes remote regions. Recent departmental activities have included investigations into the global significance of biogas fluxes from the north-western Indian Ocean, measurements of denitrification in the North Sea and stable isotope studies in the north-east Atlantic Ocean.
